Midcentury Revival

Approach

Our approach included 

(1) improving the functionality of the home – especially in the kitchen by removing the wall between the kitchen and the dining room. We also removed the tile floor in the kitchen and carried the original parquet flooring into that space eliminating the division between the kitchen and dining room 

(2) removing the gray that was everywhere and replaced it with a warm off white (Dumpling, Sherwin Williams), 

(3) capture a Scandinavian mid-century modern feel – which was mainly achieved by changing the lighting, 

(4) upgrade all of the fixtures; lighting and plumbing 

(5) create consistency between all of the trim work, hardware and doors, refinish the floors, repaint the brick to a warm urbane bronze.

Delivery / Result

Living Room – removed the mirrored wall and replaced it with a tongue in groove vertical wood texture and painted the gray brick fireplace a cozy Urbane Bronze.

Dining Room – replaced the light fixture, window treatments.

Kitchen – removed the 90’s era cabinetry and tile flooring. Carried the parquet flooring from the main space into the kitchen and installed two toned deep stained wood cabinets. Removed the wall between the kitchen and the dining room and installed a long curved peninsula for the family to gather for casual meals.

Powder Room – Removed all of the tile, repaired the rotting subfloor, installed more modern, yet mid-century modern era wallcovering, painted the existing vanity and installed a new light fixture.

In the end, we gave this family everything they were hoping for—and more. Updating the window treatments allowed natural light to pour in, filling the home with warmth and life. Refinishing the floors and removing the orange tones brought the space beautifully back to its mid-century roots, honoring its original character while feeling fresh and timeless. Opening up the kitchen to the dining room completely transformed the flow of the home, making it feel brand new.
